The technical inspection of license-free cars: what is changing
For decades, license-free cars escaped the technical inspection. That is over. Since 15 April 2024, light and heavy quadricycles have been subject to a mandatory technical inspection, just like regular cars.

Why a technical inspection for license-free cars?
The introduction of the inspection for quadricycles follows a European directive (2014/45/EU) that France transposed late. The reasons are many:
- Road safety: the license-free car fleet is aging and some vehicles drive in a worrying state (failing brakes, faulty lighting, worn tires).
- Fight against tampering: many license-free cars are tampered with to exceed the regulatory 45 km/h. The inspection now includes a top-speed check.
- European harmonization: most European countries already required the inspection for quadricycles.
The 2026 schedule: when do you need to take the inspection?
The rollout of the license-free car technical inspection follows a progressive schedule based on the vehicle’s date of first registration.

What this means for 2026
If your license-free car was registered between 2020 and 2021, you must take your first technical inspection before the end of 2026. Do not wait: inspection centers risk being saturated at year-end when the latecomers rush in.
If your license-free car is more recent (registered from 2022 on), your first inspection will take place 5 years after registration. For example, a Citroën Ami bought in March 2023 will have to take its first inspection before March 2028.
Frequency
After the first technical inspection, the frequency is 3 years (against 2 years for regular cars). This is a real advantage for license-free car owners.

The technical inspection of a light quadricycle is simpler than that of a regular car, but it remains thorough. Here are the main points examined.

The anti-tampering check: the big new feature
This is THE point that worries many license-free car owners. The technical inspection includes a top-speed check. The vehicle is placed on a test bench and must not exceed 45 km/h.
If your license-free car has been tampered with, meaning modified to drive faster than 45 km/h, it will fail the technical inspection. You will have to bring it back into compliance before you can obtain the certificate.

Where to take the inspection?
In theory, any approved inspection center can carry out the inspection of quadricycles. In practice, check that the center has the necessary equipment (notably the speed bench for the anti-tampering check). Call ahead to confirm.
The big chains (Dekra, Sécuritest, Autovision, Norisko) are generally equipped. Small independent centers may not be.
The penalties for non-compliance
Failing to take the technical inspection on time exposes you to severe penalties.
Fine and impoundment
- Fixed fine: 135 € (4th-class fine)
- Vehicle impoundment: law enforcement can impound your license-free car until you present a valid inspection
- No sticker: without an inspection, it is impossible to obtain an up-to-date registration certificate in case of sale
Impact on insurance
Driving without a valid technical inspection can lead to a refusal of compensation by your insurer in case of a claim. The insurance for your license-free car remains mandatory, but it may not apply if your vehicle is not in order.
How to properly prepare your license-free car inspection
2 weeks before: the checklist
Plan ahead to avoid a re-inspection. Here are the points to check yourself:
- Lighting: check each light (headlights, parking lights, brake lights, indicators, reversing lights, plate lighting). Replace burnt-out bulbs.
- Tires: check the wear (the wear indicators must be visible) and the pressure. Make sure the tires are the right size.
- Brakes: test the braking on a clear road. The vehicle must not pull to one side.
- Wiper blades: replace them if worn.
- Levels: brake fluid, coolant (combustion license-free car).
- Horn: check that it works.
